New Year, New Plants: Refresh Your Home with Something a Little Different

January is the season of fresh starts. After the busy festive period, many of us crave calmer spaces, cleaner lines, and a sense of renewal in our homes. While houseplants are a popular way to refresh interiors, the same varieties tend to dominate every recommendation list.

If you’re ready for something a little more interesting this year — without choosing plants that are difficult or demanding — here are some overlooked houseplants that still thrive in everyday homes.

Aspidistra (Cast Iron Plant)
Often seen as old-fashioned, the Aspidistra is quietly making a comeback — and for good reason. It tolerates low light, inconsistent watering, and cooler winter temperatures far better than most houseplants. Its deep green leaves bring structure and calm, making it ideal for hallways, bedrooms, or minimalist interiors.

Ctenanthe
If you love patterned foliage but find Calatheas tricky, Ctenanthe is a brilliant alternative. Their soft, painterly leaves move gently throughout the day and add interest without demanding constant humidity management.

Hoya
Hoyas are slow growers, which makes them perfect for January. Their thick leaves store water, meaning they cope well if watering is occasionally forgotten. Over time, they trail beautifully and can even reward patience with fragrant flowers.

Aglaonema
These plants are hugely underrated. Aglaonema thrive in low light, tolerate dry indoor air, and come in a range of subtle colours. They’re excellent for winter interiors where sunlight is limited.

Less Common Philodendrons
Instead of the usual varieties, look for Philodendron Brasil, Micans, or Painted Lady. They’re just as easy to care for but offer richer textures and colours.

Choosing something different doesn’t mean choosing something difficult — it simply means choosing thoughtfully.
